The Scalzi Award + Warbreaker

First off, new Warbreaker.  There will be more on this chapter next week.

As always, I really appreciate comments on the TWG thread or on my Livejournal.  Also, you can find all of the previous chapters at the beginning of the thread.

Now, on to other business.  Let me tell you a tale.  It's a tale of loss, a tale of victory, and a tale of a bunch of crazy people with too much time on their hands.

A tale of the Scalzi award.

So, you probably know that I was up for the Campbell award for best new writer this year.  You also probably know that I lost to Scalzi, who managed to get nominated for both the Campbell AND the Hugo for best novel.  (SCALZIII!!!!)

You may not realize, however, that there is another, lesser known award tied to the Campbell.  It's the Scalzi award, given by my loony friends to that writer who gets beaten by his evil nemesis for a writing award.

They actually got John to sign a Lego--not telling him what it was for--then built a Lego rocket ship, patterned after a Hugo award, using the block.  They gave me this after the award ceremony as a consolation prize.

I have the coolest, and the craziest, friends ever.  Pictures follow.

Me, with the Award.

That is ScalziBane that John is holding.  Yes, he does have on a tiara.  I'll explain both at a later date.  For now, let me simply say...SCALZIII!!!!

Japanese Elantris

Another pun for which I should be shot,

a poem by Brandon Sanderson

---

The other day I was talking to a friend.

We were discussing deserts.

He wanted to say that Utah was more like a desert California.

Obvious, yet true.

He tried calling it more deserty.  Desertish.  Desert-like.

He, of course, missed the obvious.  Like all very arid places, Utah is more Deserted than California.

---

Japanese Version of Elantris!

(Note.  I can't read that page, so I know next to nothing about how to get books off of it.  There is a thread on my forum discussing it.  Good luck and arigato!)

Back + Warbreaker

Whew!  Well, I'm back from Worldcon, and I'm pretty much worn out.  With the parties every night, the panels every day, and the ten hour drives each way...yeah.  Dead!

I apologize for the sparse posts last week.  Internet at the hotel was expensive, and so I only had my phone, which isn't exactly the best instrument for large-scale blogging.  Through this week, I'll be posting reactions and thoughts regarding the convention.  The short of it is, however, that I met a lot of wonderful people who treated me very nicely.

The most important news is that I lost the Campbell award to my arch-nemesis John Scalzi.  (SCALZI!!!)  However, his gracious acceptance speech almost made the loss feel good.  (We know, of course, that he is simply acting nice while his evil minions of doom slowly get into position to destroy the world.)  You should give OLD MAN'S WAR a read--it really is a great book.  (Plus, it pays to know the mind of the enemy.)

I do have a chapter of WARBREAKER for you.  In terms of the final draft, I think I'm going to put this one BEFORE the previous Vasher chapter.  However, for now, I'm going to name it chapter twenty-two so that people don't get confused.

If you haven't read the previous chapters, find them in the first post of this thread.  As always, I'd appreciate any comments you want to give on the book! It's a work in progress, and so it's still got a long way to go before it's publishable.  So, if you have suggestions, make them at the end of that same thread.

This week's signing is at the Provo Borders over in the Shops at Riverwood!  Friday at 7:00.

Signing! + Two Bad Puns (for the price of one.)

So, the other day I was in the elevator.  And, I wondered.  On the Death Star, would it be called the Elle Vader?

And then I realized that would only be appropriate for a lift that was restricted to female sith.

I'll be here all week, folks.

But, specifically, I'll be at the BYU Bookstore from 11-1 today, signing books with my good friend and MISTBORN illustrator Isaac Stewart.  Come get your book signed!

New Deleted Scene

I promised you that I'd post the alternate ending of ELANTRIS, and so I have!  I didn't promise that it was any good, however.  Remember, the reason I changed it was because I didn't really like how it went!

In other news, I--Brandon Sanderson--got up at seven a.m. this morning.  I was under the impression that such an hour was a mythological beast, kind of like a dragon, but with better breath.  I was wrong.

Its breath is terrible.

Tires + Annotation

Tires. What happened to the good old days, when you could drive about in cars with nice, solid stone tires. True, you had to petal with your feet, but at least you didn't get blow-outs.

However, after about three hours of researching, calling, and driving (on my spare) I got my car retired. Shouldn't it get social security now?

New Warbreaker! + Signing

I've posted a new chapter of Warbreaker, for those of you who are interested.  Remember, this is a later chapter, so I suggest reading from the beginning!

Chapter Twenty-One

If you haven't read the previous chapters, find them in the first post of this thread.  As always, I'd appreciate any comments you want to give on the book! It's a work in progress, and so it's still got a long way to go before it's publishable.  So, if you have suggestions, make them at the end of that same thread.

Also, I will be signing this week in two places.  First, I'll be at the downtown Salt Lake Sam Weller's store on Thursday from 6:30 to about 8:30.  If you've never been to this store, it's awesome!  A nice, big used bookstore with a nice compliment of new books as well.  It's a Salt Lake tradition, so I highly recommend visiting sometime!

On Saturday at 2:00, I'll be at the Barnes and Noble in West Jordan (Jordan Landing).  This is also a great store with a staff who is very knowledgeable about science fiction and fantasy.

New Deleted Scene

I've posted another deleted scene in the Elantris resources section.

As before, scroll down to get to the last one (the third one, this time) to read the new material. And, as always, these deleted scenes have some major spoilers in them!

I'm knee-deep in the rewrite of Mistborn 2. The first book has received an awesome reaction from readers and booksellers, so I'm quite excited about working on the next one. (Even if I do hate revisions.) If you've been watching for WARBREAKER, note that I'll be posting new chapters from that on Wednesdays. A little slower than before, but I have a lot of revising to do!

Also, if you’re going to Worldcon, drop a line and say hi to me and my friends on this thread!
